Terrorism

Hundreds of people were killed in 11 major terrorist incidents which rocked India during the year 2008. Though diseases killed many times more people than terrorism, yet the latter is the biggest problem facing all the countries today. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently said that the growing menace of terrorism was a cause of worry and that the government will go to any extent to root out terrorism from the country.

Terrorism is the systematic use of terror especially as a means of coercion. Common definitions of terrorism refer only to those acts which are intended to create fear (terror), are perpetrated for an ideological goal (as opposed to a lone attack), and deliberately target or disregard the safety of non-combatants. Some definitions also include acts of unlawful violence and war.

Terrorism in India has grown to a great extent in the last two decades. But the government is still lagging behind in implementing strong and adequate measures to combat terrorist activities. Common people should also come forward to curb this menace..

Religions do not give permission of mindless killing of innocent people, and those who are indulging in such activities have nothing to do with any religion. Nothing can be achieved by making humanity to bleed, and those who swear by the name of political goal are nothing but inhuman and should be treated in a very strong manner. No stone should be left unturned to bring these enemies of humanity to book.

Fighting with terrorism should not only be the duty of government alone. The role of civilians, and civil society is equally significant.  A strong movement is also required against all fundamentalist ideologies. No scope should be given to these hate-preachers in our country.

Finally, I want to pay my sincere homage to all those who had lost their lives in the Mumbai terror attacks. I express my deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victims, and want to assure them that they are not alone, this entire nation is equally depressed at the loss of lives. Put a brave face against the enemies of humanity and do not let them succeed in their motive of terrorizing us.
